Overview

Think Provence is all about purple lavender fields? Well… think again. Get ready for a whole palette of colors.

On this full-day private Provence family tour, your chauffeur-guide takes care of all the details so you can simply enjoy the day with your family. You’ll walk the spectacular Ocher Trail of Roussillon, where cliffs of red, orange and gold reveal centuries of pigment mining. The day continues through the green landscapes of the Luberon, with lunch in Apt (yes… even explorers need to recharge) before visiting a small family-run distillery to discover the secrets of lavender. And if you visit between mid-June and mid-August, the famous lavender fields join the show as well.

To make the day even more fun, each child receives an instant camera and quickly turns into the official reporter of the adventure.

Let’s begin with something spectacular.

Walking the Spectacular Ocher Trail of Roussillon

Your adventure begins in the village of Roussillon, famous for its glowing red and orange houses built with local ocher.

Just below the village begins the striking Ocher Trail of Roussillon. In just a few steps, the landscape suddenly turns bright red, orange and gold. Sandy paths wind between glowing cliffs and pine trees on an easy 30-minute walk, with welcome shade along the way.

For kids and teens, this is where the photo mission truly begins as they start capturing the most spectacular colors of the day.

Visiting a Historic Ocher Factory

After seeing these extraordinary colors in nature, the next step is discovering how this simple earth was transformed into pigments.

You’ll step inside a historic ocher factory where the story of these colorful cliffs comes to life. The sands of Roussillon were washed, filtered and refined to produce the famous ocher powders once shipped across Europe for paints, fabrics and artworks. Old machines and workshops reveal how an entire local industry once grew around this colorful earth.

Families who wish can also join an optional private 1.5-hour hands-on workshop. After a short introduction to pigments and traditional materials, participants learn how to create several classic paint bases before creating their own artwork on paper to take home.

Lunch in the Provençal Town of Apt

After the striking colors of Roussillon, it’s time for a relaxed lunch break in Apt, often considered the capital of the Luberon.

More lively and authentic than many postcard villages of the region, Apt has the feel of a real Provençal town with small streets, local shops and shaded squares. Your guide will recommend a good local spot before the adventure continues.

Discovering the Secrets of Lavender at a Family-Run Distillery

In the afternoon, the journey continues through the landscapes of the Luberon towards one of the region’s great treasures: lavender.

You’ll stop at a small organic family-run distillery where the same family has been cultivating and distilling aromatic plants for generations. During the visit, you’ll discover how lavender is harvested and distilled while learning to recognize the different varieties.

And if you visit between mid-June and mid-August, the experience becomes even more spectacular as lavender fields stretch across the surrounding landscapes in beautiful shades of purple. Your guide follows the flowering closely and knows exactly where the fields are at their most beautiful.

For the kids, it’s the final photo mission of the day: capturing those famous lavender fields with their instant cameras before heading back with pockets full of colorful memories.

By the end of this private Provence family tour, after a day smoothly led by your chauffeur-guide from one colorful experience to the next, there will likely be a lively debate in the van between kids, teens and parents about the favorite moment, the best photos… and the most spectacular colors discovered along the way.

Note: The itinerary may be slightly adjusted depending on your pick-up and drop-off location.

FAQ

Where can you pick us up?

We offer pick-up and drop-off anywhere in Provence or the Camargue. Whether you are staying in a hotel, a villa, or a countryside farmhouse, your guide will meet you directly at your doorstep. We take care of the logistics so you can simply enjoy the day with your family.

Will my kids (and teens) really enjoy the tour?

[bouton_read_more]

The day is varied and engaging, with different experiences that keep everyone curious from start to finish. To make it even more fun, each child receives an Instamatic camera for a “Reporter Mission,” capturing the most spectacular colors of Provence, from the ocher cliffs of Roussillon to the lavender landscapes of the Luberon. (Note: Cameras are lent for use at no additional cost and can be purchased afterward for €140 if your kids wish to keep them). And for those who love hands-on activities, an optional workshop lets the whole family create their own paints using natural pigments.

How difficult is the Ocher Trail of Roussillon?

It’s an easy and enjoyable walk suitable for most visitors. Despite the name “trail,” this is definitely not an Ironman competition. During the tour we follow the shorter loop, which takes about 30 minutes. The sandy paths wind between colorful cliffs and pine trees, with a few steps and gentle slopes along the way. Comfortable shoes are recommended, and you may want to avoid white shoes as the ocher sand can easily stain them. Please note that the trail is not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs.

What is the optional pigment workshop?

This optional hands-on workshop lasts about 90 minutes and takes place in the historic ocher factory. After a short introduction to ochre pigments, participants create their own paints using ingredients such as gum arabic, egg… and even fresh cheese (yes, really!) to make casein paint. They then use their paints to create an artwork on paper to take home, a colorful souvenir of your day in Provence.

Is lunch included during the tour?

Lunch is not included in the tour price, but don’t worry, we won’t let you starve. In Apt, your guide will recommend several local restaurants and help you choose based on your tastes.

Will we see lavender fields during the tour?

Lavender typically blooms across the Luberon from mid-June to mid-August, sometimes a few days earlier or later depending on the weather. During this period, you’ll see the famous purple fields. The visit to a family-run distillery is included year-round, where you’ll discover how lavender is harvested and distilled. Outside the blooming season, you can see other aromatic plant fields such as rosemary.
