Even if you aren’t in Paris on Christmas day, Paris’s holiday spirit can be enjoyed from November to January thanks to its magical decorations that last for almost two months. Thank goodness, because the Christmas illuminations take the meaning of the ‘City of Lights’ to a whole new level.

From Boulevard Haussmann’s department stores to the edge of Champs-Elysées, your family will stroll into the core of an incandescent world, which makes Paris at night simply magical.

Your family’s evening stroll will start at Galeries Lafayette, where the biggest indoor Christmas tree in Paris stands at 50 feet tall. Wow! Your youngsters will wonder at this year’s choice of decorations. Depending on the year, it could be blue, red, or green, furnished with baubles, garlands, flowers, or simply made out of paper. Sometimes, it is hung upside down. However it is decorated this year, your kid’s first-hand experience will guarantee that they won’t forget it for many years to come.

Take time on Boulevard Haussman outside the Galeries to admire the outstanding window displays of some of the biggest brands. This has been a Parisian tradition since before WWI! Scenes of sparkling lights and entertaining automatons will be sure to amuse your little ones.

Give your kids a holiday experience they will never forget with this Christmas Illuminations Family Walking Tour in Paris

As you make your way to Place de la Madeleine, marvel all around you; the roads and side streets have been transformed into a holiday postcard, strung with lights and garlands. As you near the Madeleine Church, you’ll stumble upon a long-standing carousel. Take a look at another type of window display at Fauchon, one of the most luxurious Parisian caterers for 130 years.

Meander down Rue Royale and head toward the Tuileries Christmas Market. Before you enter, relax and enjoy a typical holiday drink- a spiced hot chocolate or mulled wine. Yummy! From here you can view the magnificent illuminations of Place de la Concorde and the beginning of the magical Champs-Elysées.

Head inside the Tuileries Christmas market to discover regional holiday specialties and attractions for the kids. There is something for family members of any and all ages! Before you call it a night, be sure to look toward the Eiffel Tower during the first 5 minutes of the hour and witness the most magnificent light show of all.

Is this tour okay for children?

Of course! Even the smallest ones will be delighted by Christmas illuminations coming from department store installations, specially made for them.

Paris never witnesses heavy snow so there is no obstacle for walking during winter. Just be sure to dress warmly.

This was my family’s first trip to Paris and it was stunning at Christmas time. The decorations, lights, trees, shopping and multiple Christmas markets that we visited exceeded our expectations. Each arrondissement had a unique style from quaint (Montmartre) to flashy (Champs-Elysees.) Our illuminations tour was a fabulous way to kick off our arrival in Paris, and we ended our trip 6 days later with the chocolate tasting tour in Saint Germain. Cindy with Bonjour Meet the Locals was our fabulous guide for the entire week, and we appreciated her knowledge and flexibility guiding our family throughout Paris’ top attractions.

We booked 3 tours with “Meet the Locals”. One was the Christmas Illuminations & Christmas market walking tour, one was Montmartre Safari, and one was the Sweet and Chocolate Family Treasure Hunt. All were headed up by Natalie as our guide and she was wonderful, very attentive to our 11 year old daughter to keep her involved and focused. My favorite of the 3 was this walking sweets tour – I highly recommend it. Not only are you walking thru a very lovely neighborhood, you are being educated with all the history of the buildings and events that took place there over the decades. PLUS, all the treats you get to try are amazing! Natalie was a wealth of information about not only the things on our tour, but also any questions we had about restaurants or museums or shopping. In fact – Before we even arrived in Paris, Liz and Dominique from Meet the Locals were emailing us to assist us in making sure we knew where to be and when. They were so extremely helpful that I ended up asking them about some other tours they offer and booked an additional tour straight thru them.
I have already recommended them to friends who are traveling to Paris in the spring, and if we were to go to Paris again, they would be the only ones I call to book any tours.

We managed to do 3 private tours with Meet the Locals plus all our airport transfers – Treasure Hunt at the Louvre, Chocolate Walking Tour and Christmas Market & Illuminations. From the moment I started communicating with Dominique till the end – she was very warm, friendly, accommodating and couldn’t do enough for us. We really felt looked after especially because my husband and I travelled with 2 kids during the busiest time (over Christmas and New Year) not to mention with very limited Fench. The highlight for the kids (and adults) were the Chocolate Walking tour at St Germain with Amandine, she was so engaging and had the kids captivated with all the sweets and yummy treats! The Treasure Hunt at The Louvre with Yaelle was also another highlight – she was warm and very good with our kids. Highly recommend and have already given Dominique’s details to a friend going over with kids soon 🙂 Merci beaucoup from all of us

Florent took My wife and I on a great evening walking tour of the Paris Christmas illuminations.
He had terrific background knowledge of what we were seeing and we enjoyed his enthusiasm for his native city , the history and the architecture .
His colleague Joao came with us and took great photos of us “posing” to show us the illuminated Tour Eiffel from a rooftop.
We also took a second walking tour with Meet The Locals the next day; Montmartre Artists with Sean, also an excellent and knowledgeable guide.
    Highly Recommended
