Do you have a family of would-be witches and wizards (and maybe the odd muggle) who yearn to learn where Harry Potter first came to ‘life’ and follow in the footsteps of his talented creator?
You do? Well then, THIS is the tour for you!
Put on your Gryffindor robe, fire up your magic wand and get ready for adventure, mischief and more than a little magic!
Jam-packed with wizardly highlights, this family-friendly tour takes you on a journey through the twists and turns of mysterious alleys and peculiar passageways led by our expert guides dressed in unmissable green capes. Enjoy an entertaining romp past famous landmarks and familiar places to discover the Edinburgh which inspired the most popular books in the history of publishing, with a few sorcery sweets thrown in!
With its own dark history of witches and wizards, Edinburgh brings to life the captivating adventures of Harry, Ron and Hermione, while our kid-friendly guides ignite the imagination of even the most stubborn of muggles.
Which building do you think was the inspiration for Hogwarts? Look up! Is it Edinburgh Castle, looming over the city since the 12th-century from high on a hill and with a history of witch hunting (allegedly over 4000 witches were put to death here!)? Those spooky walls and volcanic stone hold many secrets yet to be told!
Or is it George Heriot’s School? One of many prestigious places of learning housed in turreted, castle-like buildings and which separates their students into four houses? Was this the pre-cursor to Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw?

Next door to the George Heriot school is Greyfriars Churchyard. Look out for at least five familiar names that found fame in the Harry Potter books. See if you can find the grave of Thomas Riddell and who do you think he is in the books? Here’s a clue – we cannot say his name!
On we go through the mystifying maze of ancient alleyways to Victoria Street with its colourful curves and myriad of shops. Does it remind you of Diagon Alley where Harry and his wizardly cohorts purchased all their magical supplies for Hogwarts school year? Legend has it that there used to be a shop here selling all kinds of brushes and broomsticks, and as it is not far from the Elephant House Café where JK Rowling would sit and write, it is highly likely that she used it as her muse. It’s the perfect place to return to after your tour has ended and gaze out across to Edinburgh Castle, brooding on its hill, and, if you visit in August when the annual military tattoo takes place inside the castle grounds, you will see an uncanny resemblance to a Quidditch pitch when they construct the seating arena!
To complete our tour, here is a little secret to discover! If you visit City Chambers, just off the Royal Mile, you can place your hands in the gilded hands of the one who wrote the books!
Harry Potter is a global phenomenon with Scottish roots and our exciting family tour promises to bring another level of Potterhead enlightenment, no matter what your level of wizardry.
And if you look for a visit more dedicated to teenagers at Edinburgh, have a look at our Sherlock Holmes Teens Tour!
Our Harry Potter family tour is a fun way to explore Edinburgh, regardless of your level of fandom. But it has been designed with wizard-loving muggles in mind, so if your kids do not care for Harry Potter at all, we might recommend one of our other Edinburgh kid tours.

Absolutely! Your Harry Potter expert guide knows how to change their narrative to engage and inform witches and wizards of all ages and ensure everyone has fun!
Our tours always operate, rain or shine! We suspect that Harry Potter can change the weather with a shake of his wand, but as he will not be with us it’s important to remember that Scotland is famous for its changeable weather and sometimes is generous, giving you all four seasons in one day! Although our guides will always opt for covered stops when possible, we recommend taking a rain coat and umbrella if it might rain!
Can the guide meet us at our hotel?
Yes this is possible with an extra charge of 80€. Just mention it at time of booking
