What’s Included:
Edinburgh is full of famous landmarks steeped in Scottish heritage, monuments to world-famous figures and with endless history everywhere you turn. If you are travelling to this stunning country of rolling hills and heather moors, then the capital city is a must-stop on your tour.
But where to start when there is so much to see and do in a limited time? At Meet the Locals we always recommend a tour of Edinburgh Castle as your first stop. It’s not only as packed with history as the city itself, but it is a great fun tour for all the family!
Did you know Edinburgh Castle has been attacked 23 times making it the MOST besieged castle in Great Britain? Thankfully it has had a pretty quiet life since its last attack in 1745! Phew!
Oh, and don’t worry about the volcano! It last exploded 340 million years ago, so chances are you are pretty safe on your two-hour tour!
Now, 3000 years is a lot to cover in two hours so be prepared to enter an aural time machine and hear about the bloody history of all the Kings and Queens who lived here – Mary Queen of Scots for example – and why it was home to an elephant (yes, really!), plus discover who is said to haunt the castle and hear his ghostly story!
Edinburgh Castle is infamous for its dark and fascinating history; from burned witches and tortured prisoners to royal treachery and failed escapes, there are foul deeds and gruesome headlines to be discovered at every turn! If your children are fond of foul facts and gory tales, our Meet the Locals guide will be happy to share some gruesome details with them!

To ensure an entertaining and educational visit, children will be given a booklet to complete and keep as they tour this fortress, one of the most important in Scottish history.
Our tour starts in the Castle Esplanade which has a rich military history and has witnessed many ceremonies, you might have heard of the annual Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo which takes place every August and is a celebration of the best of British Military featuring international performances of skill and precision from a global cast.
Next we move on to explore the opulence of the Royal Palace, home to the stone of destiny and the Scottish Crown Jewels. Here’s a question: Have you ever misplaced your phone or your keys? Yes? In that case you might sympathise with the person who locked the Scottish Crown Jewels in a chest in 1707, following the Union between Scotland and England, and then forgot where he’d put them! They were not discovered again until 1818 and who knows what happened to the person who lost them?
To get the very best out of this tour, we usually suggest it for kids of 6-years and over in order for them to enjoy and complete our booklet. However, our expert, kid-friendly guides are talented at entertaining kids of all ages.

On your Edinburgh castle kids tour we provide skip-the-line tickets. However, occasionally on very busy days, there might be a short delay at the security checks. Skip-the-line tickets are not available for viewing the Crown Jewels inside the castle.
Yes, of course! We know that there is a lot to see and enjoy, and we cannot cover everything in just 2 hours. We recommend an afternoon tea at The Tea Rooms on Crown Square in the heart of Edinburgh Castle where you can enjoy sweet treats in the surroundings once used by Royalty! Or have lunch or a snack at The Redcoat Café, popular with families it has won many awards for its friendly facilities and choice of options.
PLEASE NOTE: once you leave the Castle grounds, you will not be allowed to re-enter.
Edinburgh Castle can accommodate most wheelchairs, but some areas do not have wheelchair access due to the nature of old buildings. Strollers are not accepted inside the Castle rooms, but our wonderful guides can give you all the details before you get inside and will wait outside with the stroller while you visit the Castle rooms.
Absolutely! Our booklet of games might be a little young for them, but as this is a private tour just for you, our expert guide will ensure the narrative suits their needs. And if they like a grisly story of the gruesome goings-on within the Castle walls, just let us know!
Yes this is possible with an extra charge of 80€. Just mention it at time of booking.
