Edinburgh is full of stories, secrets, and centuries of history-and this private 2-hour and a half walking tour is the perfect way to explore it all together. With a kid-friendly guide by your side, you’ll uncover the city’s most iconic neighborhoods: the atmospheric Old Town and the elegant New Town, both recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites for their historical and architectural significance.
We’ll begin our journey in the Old Town, a maze of cobbled streets, narrow medieval closes, and dramatic tales. As you stroll along the famous Royal Mile, your guide will bring the past to life with stories of ancient kings and queens, daily life in the Middle Ages, and even a few hair-raising public executions. You’ll also visit the legendary Greyfriars Kirkyard, where you’ll meet Greyfriars Bobby-the loyal little dog who captured the hearts of locals-and hear some spooky legends about grave robbers and ghostly encounters. Nearby, you’ll also discover spots that inspired J.K. Rowling, who wrote much of Harry Potter right here in Edinburgh. Fans of the series will love hearing how the city’s atmosphere and even some names from Greyfriars influenced her magical world.

From there, we’ll cross over to the New Town, developed in the 18th century to ease overcrowding in the older part of the city. This elegant area showcases wide boulevards, neoclassical buildings, and leafy squares like St Andrew Square. It’s a chance to discover a more refined side of Edinburgh, shaped during the Age of Enlightenment-when the city earned its nickname “the Athens of the North” for its thriving intellectual life and bold urban vision. This part of the city was home to philosophers, inventors, and visionaries who helped shape the modern world.
What makes this tour truly unique is your guide: a family expert who knows how to adapt every stop, fact, and story to your children’s ages and interests. Whether you’re traveling with young kids, tweens, or curious teens, the pace and content will feel perfectly tailored.
To make it even more fun, your family will enjoy an interactive quiz during the walk-turning the city into a playful and memorable outdoor adventure.
